Fitness class for soccer team

I got conned into being the middle school soccer coach by my son. If nobody would have stepped up, there would have been no team. I knew next to nothing about soccer and how to coach. Rather than fake it and have a horrible team, I have been proactive about learning. I have talked to other coaches, watched videos and read books about training methods for soccer. One thing has almost come up, cardio. A good soccer team needs to have great cardio. The kids run up and down a giant field an entire game. They need to not tire out and be done within the first five minutes. I then tried to figure out how to prepare them cardio wise. I am not a fitness expert at all, thankfully my brother is. He works at the core progression in town as a fitness expert. I got a discount due to being family and working with the school. Over the summer I had the boys go to the core progression gym three days a week to work on cardio drills. The other two days we were at the field practicing kicking and footwork. The fitness class was run by my brother and he was awesome. He knew just how to motivate young boys and get them not to quit. The drills were fun and competitive. I wrote down everything he had them do and plan to keep it going when our season starts. We might not win a single game, but I now feel my team won’t embarrass themselves on the field.

In middle school there used to be a jump rope unit for gym class.

The gym teacher would get out a giant box of beaded ropes.

There were green, red and blue ropes that signified the different sizes. I wasn’t taught how to size a jump rope to myself. I also wasn’t taught how to actually jump. I was told to grab a rope and jump the entire class. I hated the jump rope unit. My rope was always too long and smacked me in the legs. I would tire easily and felt embarrassed. When I started taking a group fitness class at the core progression near me, I almost quit when the fitness expert introduced jump roping. I figured it would feel just like I was 12 years old again. The fitness expert actually sized the jump rope to our height. We then were taught how to breathe and hold the rope. The fitness expert doesn’t just have us jump two footed. I learned how to alternate feet, jump one footed, turn, kick and run with the rope. The fitness class started just doing 5 minutes of rope jumping as a warm up. The fitness expert has now upped it where the jumping potion is almost half of class. I have even talked to him about doing an all jump rope class. I want to see if I can do a solid hour of it. It is a great cardio workout. My legs look super toned and my butt is hard as a rock. I actually enjoy jumping rope after being taught how to do it.

Trying kickboxing after my husband gave up on it

My husband is one of those people who starts something all gung ho, and then quits halfway into it.

We have a lot of projects around the house that are half finished.

He loves starting a new hobby, buying all the equipment and then dropping it after two weeks. I typically try to utilize the stuff he buys and finish his half done projects. The most recent one is that my husband said he was going to get into kickboxing. He bought himself a heavy bag and mounted it in our garage. He then got speed bags, mats and boxing gloves. He even found a fitness center that offers kickboxing classes for workout purposes and other classes to actually learn how to fight. After buying all the equipment, he spent a week trying it out. Now all that stuff is sitting in the garage and the classes are starting up at the fitness center. I decided to give kickboxing a try. I love doing it as a work out now! I start doing speed bag drills to get my arms warm and loose. Then I hit the heavy bag doing arms and leg strikes. I then end my session either shadow boxing or doing a loose stretch. I found all the kickboxing information that my husband gathered. I think I am going to sign up. I actually want to learn how to punch properly and throw a kick. I know I am doing something wrong. It wouldn’t hurt learning self defense and I know the work out will be intense.

Started riding my bike again

Started riding my bike again

I gave up riding my bike when I was around ten years old.

  • I then picked the habit back up again at 25.

My reasons for bike riding are a lot different from when I was a kid. I now ride only for a work out. I love doing heavy cardio workouts. There is only so much running a body can take. I moved onto jumping rope and swimming laps. Finally I decided to give bike riding another chance. Thankfully I have been smart about getting back on the bike. I did not cheap out and I bought a properly sized bike that is made to go on and off road. I had a kickstand and water bottle holder installed to make it easier for me. I also got a speaker that hooks to my bike and a holder for my phone. I can have hands free music, easy access to water and I mounted a basket on my bike to carry a yoga mat. What I will do is a twenty minute bike ride to the local soccer field. I then take out my yoga mat and do crunches and stretching. I then pack everything up and do the twenty minute ride back. I get an hour of working out and I do a whole list of different things. I have started to really enjoy riding my bike now. I am able to stop and start so much easier. I can take tight turns and switch gears with ease. Someday I would like to be able to do a very long, almost an hour bike ride.

When my husband and I go to the gym it is almost comical.

The two of us do the exact opposite of the other one.

I like to focus on cardio. I hit the treadmill, elliptical, rowing machine and stationary bike. I like to do 15 minutes on each one just working as fast as I can. I then do a loose stretch and swim some laps in the pool. My husband likes to do weight lifting. He goes to the other end and lifts giant weights to work all areas of his arms. He will even do leg press and arm curl machines as well. He then will stretch, but in the sauna of the gym. He likes sweating out the toxins and relaxing in the steam. I like the cold pool water washing away my sweat and getting more cardio in. The two of us can’t find anything work out related that we both like to do. He wants to build muscle and then relax. I want to cut weight and get out of there. I go as fast as humanly possible moving through the gym. My husband takes his time to do more weight and more reps. We have talked about maybe trying a group fitness class to see if we both enjoy working with a personal trainer. The class should be a mix of both things we like to do. Maybe we can meet in the middle and both enjoy the class. It seems unlikely with how different we are working out.

For awhile I got out of the habit of going to the gym.

I realized that hardly any of the machines appealed to me.

I mainly used the elliptical and then stretched on the mats. It seemed like a waste of money paying for a gym membership to use one machine. It also was very time consuming driving there and back. I hated using the locker room showers and packing a bag as well. A core progression recently opened up and they now have a pool. I decided to give it a try to utilize the pool. I love swimming for a work out now. With swimming, you are using your entire body to propel yourself forward. You also can really get your heart rate pumping with a swim. The water is so gentle on your muscles. Anytime I am sore and worried about a workout aggravating my body, I take a dip in the pool. I feel so much better afterwards. The pool is such a relaxing and fun way to burn calories. I don’t feel I need to work out as long in order to get physically fit. Since I am in the water too, I forgo a shower and just head home. I am really loving going to the core progression a few times a week for my work out. I have even thought of giving their personal training a try. The gym is all brand new with high end equipment and mats. The personal trainers are certified fitness experts. It couldn’t hurt to at least try one session to see if I like it.

Heater is too noisy for sleep

I’m looking forward to a good night’s sleep tonight without being interrupted by heater noises

My heater woke me up several times last night. It seems that every time the heater kicked on, it made this terrible grinding noise. Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep last night. I woke up about every 45 minutes to the heater kicking on. About the time I would fall back asleep, it would kick back on again. Around 3 in the morning, I finally got up and turned the heater down to about 50 degrees. I couldn’t turn it off entirely because then the pipes would freeze. Turning the heater down bought me about three hours of sleep. Around 6 am, the heater kicked on once more and I finally just got up and started my day. The first order of business was to call a heater repairman to come out and take a look at my system. The second order of business was to call out sick to work. First, I didn’t get any sleep, second I needed to be home for the heater repair company when they arrived around 10 am. The heating company did a good job fixing my heater. They spent about two and a half hours tinkering around with it but it was clear that they knew what they were doing. Once they were done, they turned the heater back on and it was more quiet than it has ever been. I could hardly hear it working. I’m looking forward to a good night’s sleep tonight without being interrupted by heater noises. I might even take a nap this afternoon. I think I really need it.

HVAC cleaning solution really stinks

Every 6 months, the HVAC technicians come out and service our HVAC system.

In late fall, they make sure that the heater is up to the task of keeping our home warm for the winter.

In late spring, they make sure that the air conditioner won’t break down over the summer holiday. Usually this goes just fine. Occasionally there’s a few minor repairs that need to be done but there has never been anything major. Yesterday, the HVAC technicians came out and cleaned the HVAC system in preparation for summer. They must have done something differently this time though because now my whole house smells like bleach. I’m very sensitive to odors and whatever they cleaned my HVAC system with is making me feel ill. The smell is circulating through the whole house even though the HVAC technicians finished their work over two hours ago. I opened up my doors and windows and turned on the ceiling fan. I’m also keeping the air conditioner on so that it gets rid of the odor. But still, two hours later, it’s just a smelly now as it was after the technicians left. I called up the HVAC company to find out what they had used and they aren’t giving me any good answers. I really want the HVAC technicians to come back and get rid of this smell. It’s making me sick. I’m starting to think I might need to get a new HVAC company. Either that, or I need to make sure that this one never uses that cleaning solution ever again.

My daughter works for a fast food restaurant chain.

Needless to say, they have not closed down in the middle of this pandemic.

They have closed their dining room but my daughter works on the front lines, taking payment and handing food to the many people who drive through the take out line. I don’t like it, but what can I do! They don’t even wear face masks. I bought my daughter a face mask but she refuses to wear it. She said no one else is wearing them. My daughter is young and healthy so I think she’ll be just fine if she gets sick. However, my son would not be. He has a whole slew of medical issues caused by his cancer diagnosis. I don’t want him to get sick. If he did, he would most likely die. But I can’t tell my daughter she can’t work either. She is putting herself through college with that job. That’s why I decided to get a whole home air purification system installed in the house. With a whole home air purification system, germs will not be circulated throughout the house through the ductwork system. Instead, the air purifier uses UV light and strong HEPA filters to stop viruses in their tracks. Additionally, my daughter is super careful when she comes home from work. She takes a shower and washes her clothes immediately. She’s very supportive of her brother’s health and cares about him a great deal. She actually helped pay for the whole home purification system. I have faith that it’s all going to work out. But a mother can worry anyway.

Air purifier for essential worker

It seems to be working so far

My company has a lot of people working from home now. This is to fit in with the CDC recommendations with the virus going around. However, it’s not possible for some of us managers to work from home. So there’s about 10 of us still here in the office. I wish that I could be one of the lucky ones who gets to work from home. But that’s just not possible. Still, I worry about my health. My family also worries about my health. My husband got me a portable air purifier to plug into near my desk. At first I thought he was just being nice. But then he also got a portable air purification system for the house and he installed HEPA filters in our HVAC system at home. I realized that my husband got me the purification system for work, not to be nice, but because he doesn’t want me taking home sickness to the rest of the family. That’s all right. I don’t want to take home any sickness to the family either. So I’m using my air purifier at work and I’m washing my hands several times throughout the day. I even wear a mask, in the office, whenever I’m not at my desk. It seems to be working so far. It’s been over 3 months since we started having people work from home and no one in my office has gotten sick yet. One of the home workers has gotten sick but she hasn’t been to the office in over two months. So I think we’re good.
