My sister is diligent with her air conditioner maintenance and care

Even though we all had the same parents, my siblings and I are all vastly different.

  • This goes for both personality and temperament.

My brother is lazy and doesn’t have very many aspirations. He works a job that keeps him afloat financially, but he’s happy coming home every night and getting drunk before he goes to bed and repeats the process the following day. He’s single and has no desire to form a long term relationship with a partner. Instead, he has his fun at the bars on the weekends with his various one night stands. My sister is the exact opposite. She is extremely motivated and has excelled in life since she was a student in kindergarten. She always had the best grades out of the three of us, and it was to no one’s surprise when she was accepted into an Ivy League university. Aside from her academic pursuits, she’s also hands on with maintenance around the house and is better with tools than my brother. It’s inspiring to see someone as devoted to air conditioner maintenance and care as she is. She orders her HVAC filters in bulk off the internet and creates alarms in her phone as reminders to swap them out after four weeks transpire. She also has an annual maintenance contract that covers quarterly inspections by her HVAC supplier. This prevents any latent issues from becoming serious problems. You always have the privilege of knowing that your system is being watched regularly by a trained professional. I signed up for my own maintenance contract at her recommendation.

I always check for a stream of water leaving my condensate line outside

I always check for a stream of water leaving my condensate line outside

It’s really smart to inspect your rain gutters from time to time.

I know a lot of people who don’t even think that they’re important for any reason, let alone for roof leaks.

The reality of rain gutters is far graver than what these people could ever imagine. If you don’t keep them free of leaves and other yard debris, the water flows backward onto the roof as it rains. It collects at the edge of the roof and can soak into the wood under the shingles. Think of it like this—without the gutters, the water simply flows off the edge of the roof and onto the ground below. If there was a large obstruction along the entire edge of the roof, water would simply pool along the edges and soak into the plywood under the shingles. With enough time, it could cause a massive roof leak that would lead to mold in your attic with thousands of dollars worth of water damage to repair. Whenever I check my gutters once a month, I also look at the exit point for my central HVAC system’s condensate line. It’s a small PVC pipe that sticks out the side of one’s home, often near the HVAC condenser unit. If you don’t see water exiting this pipe while the air conditioner is running, you need to shut your system down immediately and clear out the line with a vacuum cleaner. This procedure is covered by my HVAC maintenance contract and my technician does it every time he’s at my house. A clogged condensate line can cause a huge water leak inside the house.

There’s an HVAC manufacturer that is notorious for badly performing air conditioners

There’s an HVAC manufacturer that is notorious for badly performing air conditioners

I knew that some cars are lemons from the factory, but I didn’t realize that certain manufacturers are notorious for lemons compared with others.

My cousin had to deal with a nightmare situation involving a loan on a $25,000 car.

He kept taking it back to the dealership one problem after the next. It was absolutely insane to watch all of this unfold over social media. In the beginning he was genuinely happy because he was getting a car model he had lusted after since he was a kid. But after one issue was fixed, some other part or component would fail. He was saved at the last minute by the dealership, since thankfully they have an anti-lemon clause in their loan contracts. After so many repairs on a new car, the vehicle is sent back to the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the new car is the same model, just from a different batch. He still has problems with the car, but nothing severe enough to let him return it like the last one. Believe it or not, but I had the same problem with an air conditioner I desperately tried to like. After it was installed, I had nothing but troubles with its daily performance. I couldn’t get the machine to lower the temperatures in the house beyond 78 degrees, regardless of how hot it is outside at any given moment. Since I couldn’t return the machine, I had to make do with it for 10 years before I finally gave up and replaced it. A good air conditioner would have lasted at least 15 years under normal conditions.

The heating and cooling technicians wake up at sunrise to get to work by 7am

The heating and cooling technicians wake up at sunrise to get to work by 7am

He says that working as an air conditioner and furnace technician is the hardest work he has ever done in his life

I have been working a late afternoon and early evening job for the past 12 years. At first I was a stringer reporter for the sports section at my local newspaper. I received calls at night from high school coaches reporting the results of the evening’s games. Having this job for several years made me used to working in the evening hours. By the time I graduated college, I was already looking for new work and managed to secure a remote job as a phone technician. To my luck, I was given an evening shift yet again. I love having the ability to sleep in and stay up late like I did in college. Not everyone has this privilege. My old college roommate is working at a band these days, and his shift starts at 9am. Since his lunch hours are not paid work time, he doesn’t get to leave the building until 6pm in the afternoon. My buddy the HVAC technician has it even worse. He has to be at the heating and cooling warehouse by 7am every single morning. The jobs that he’s assigned to each day start as early as 7:30 to 8am. He works until 5pm on normal days and even later when he’s forced into an overtime shift. He says that working as an air conditioner and furnace technician is the hardest work he has ever done in his life. This is someone who previously worked in the food and hospitality industry for over 10 years before training as an HVAC apprentice. He knows what it’s like to work a back breaking job, and apparently heating and cooling has been the hardest thus far.

I Added a Dehumidifier To My Central HVAC System

I Added a Dehumidifier To My Central HVAC System

I showed the HVAC provider all the moisture and mold and he suggested that I install a dehumidifier to my central HVAC system.

I moved into my current house at the beginning of summer. By the time I had all my boxes unpacked and my furniture placed around the house, the summer heat was seeping in. I ran my air conditioner like I had in my previous home, but it felt like my AC was running constantly. Not only could I hear the AC running all day, but it felt like my house was struggling to stay cool. I replaced my air filter, but the previous one hardly looked dirty. A few weeks went by when I noticed that the humidity was seeping into my house. The AC was running all day in order to combat the humidity, but there was condensation building up on my windows and some of my furniture seemed wet. I even found mold growing along the window ledges because there was so much water being trapped. My utility bill was higher than I’ve ever seen, so I knew something was terribly wrong. I called the local HVAC provider and scheduled an HVAC technician to come check out my AC system. I showed the HVAC provider all the moisture and mold and he suggested that I install a dehumidifier to my central HVAC system. It would be more powerful than a standalone dehumidifier and it would cover the entire house. My AC system was running constantly because it was trying to keep up with the humidity levels, which was causing my utility bills to be so high. I noticed an improvement in my indoor air quality as soon as the dehumidifier was added to my central HVAC system.

I Needed a Ductless Mini System In My Office Shed

I Needed a Ductless Mini System In My Office Shed

I also had nowhere to store either of them during the offseason

One of the main selling points to the house I’m in was the shed in the backyard. It was situated right off the covered patio, which meant it was really easy to access. It had several large windows inside, and the roof was pretty high for a standard shed. The previous owners were using it to hold all their gardening tools, but I had other plans for it. I work from home, so I wanted to transform the shed into an office that was separate from the house. I’d had a home office within the main house for years, but it was noisy and I often got distracted. My kids were also old enough to stay in the house unsupervised now, so the shed was the perfect escape. The only thing about the shed was that it wasn’t insulated and there was no heat or air. Thankfully, my handy husband was able to add a thin layer of insulation. We knew we’d never be able to connect the shed to our central HVAC ductwork, so we had to get creative on how to heat and cool the space. My husband thought a simple portable heater and fan would be nice, but I didn’t want to give up space within the already tiny shed. I also had nowhere to store either of them during the offseason. After researching other HVAC options, I discovered the ductless mini system. It was a thin, modern unit that attached to any wall and it was controlled by a small remote. I could switch between heat and air effortlessly, and it ran off electricity! This was the best way to heat and cool my office in the shed!

The Window AC Unit Blocked My Lake View, So I Removed It

The Window AC Unit Blocked My Lake View, So I Removed It

I’ve always dreamed about owning my own house on one of the biggest lakes in the state.

My grandmother has a house on the lake and as I’ve grown up visiting her, I’ve always admired her lake access. I told myself that I was going to graduate college, work hard for a few years in order to make money for a downpayment, and then I was going to buy my first house on that same lake. I toured a few properties with a realtor, but there was one that stood out to me the most. The wall facing the lake had floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the lake and the master bedroom had a big lake-facing window as well. I envisioned myself waking up to watch the sunrise there with my coffee and fell in love. Shortly after moving in, I noticed a hitch in my plans. There was a window AC unit in the master bedroom. It was large and chunky and the only thing I could see from bed. Instead of waking up and looking at the sunrise, all I could see was the window AC unit! Not only was it big, but it made a lot of noise too! I couldn’t stand to endure the window AC unit, so I called my HVAC provider and asked about installing central AC instead. Unfortunately, it was going to cost a fortune because the house didn’t have any ductwork. Instead, the HVAC professional suggested I install a ductless mini split system. It was a sleek and modern HVAC unit that attached to the wall and would quietly give off air. The ductless mini split system was the most affordable and efficient option!

I Switched to Central AC

I Switched to Central AC

After living in this region for 3 years now, I’ve realized that having central AC isn’t necessary.

  • The weather is so mild during the summer months that leaving a few windows open is usually enough.

I do have a couple window AC units that I use on the warmer days. Winter on the other hand is a lot more intense. The temperature begins to fall in the middle of August, and by September we’ve typically had our first snow. It snows heavily until February and then we get light dustings of ice and snow until April or sometimes even May. Since the cold, winter season lasts so long here, a good central furnace is essential in this region. Everybody knows how important it is to buy the best furnace on the market and that it needs servicing twice per year in order to run efficiently. Even though I don’t need central AC because the summer heat isn’t that bad, I still wanted to upgrade from my window units. I hated how big and bulky they were, because they took up the whole window. I couldn’t put curtains around the units either. I also didn’t like how noisy the window units were whenever I turned the AC on. I met with an HVAC professional and asked how easy it would be to install central AC, so he looked at the existing HVAC system in order to give me an estimate. Thankfully, I already had ductwork installed for the furnace, so I wouldn’t have to spend thousands of dollars on ductwork. I’m so glad I made the decision to switch from window AC units to central AC, even if I only use it for a few weeks.

Choosing a geothermal heat pump for modern house

Choosing a geothermal heat pump for modern house

When every one of us first got married, our fiance & I invested in a beautiful plot of land, however both of us were honestly gleeful to build our own home; Unfortunately, it took us almost eight years to save up enough money & figure out a yellowprint every one of us were ecstatic with.

He & I carefully researched everything from the best roof materials to the most reliable water heaters.

Both of us wanted to make smart decisions & create a comfortable, environmentally responsible home, however one of the largest debates was the type of heating & cooling method to install, but in our local area, the temperature swings from the high eighties to twenty below zero. Both of us deal with high winds, sleet, snow, torrential downpours, brutal wind chill & excessive humidity. Both of us were looking for an energy efficient, cost-effective & dependable method that would provide both heating & cooling. Both of us looked into a forced air furnace & central air conditioning but didn’t prefer the energy losses associated with ductwork. Both of us checked out boiler heating but weren’t ecstatic with no possibility for cooling… After a lot of research, every one of us finally decided on a geothermal heat pump, and this type of method is a much greater initial investment but officially pays for itself through energy savings in under numerous years, but plus, every one of us were able to take advantage of government incentives & tax savings. The EPA considers geothermal Heating & Air Conditioning to be the most environmentally friendly means of temperature control. It takes advantage of the free & renewable energy source offered by the sun. An underground loop method pulls heat out of the ground in the Winter & transfers it into the home. In the summer, the heat pump reverses direction to act honestly much prefer a conventional air conditioner. Another benefit is that the geothermal method provides a virtually free source of warm water.
